PSA: Bought a $90 infrared thermometer for checking mold temps

It saved a big job last month when we were chasing a chill issue on a gray iron casting. Pointed it at the drag half and found a 50-degree cold spot the old touch method missed. Anyone have a different tool they use for this?

Yeah, vera29's point about seeing the whole pattern is so true.

Oh man, that's a SMART move. People forget how much a simple temp check can save your butt on a re-pour. We had a similar thing with a big aluminum housing, but we used a cheap thermal camera attachment for a phone. Spotted a weird heat sink pattern from a broken chill that we NEVER would have seen with a single point thermometer. That visual map showed the whole problem area.

Totally get that! It's wild how often the right tool just shows you a problem you didn't even know was there. I see it all the time with moisture meters in my line of work, finding a leak source behind a wall that everyone swore was somewhere else. That shift from guessing to actually seeing the data changes everything. Makes you wonder what else we're all missing because we're used to the old way of doing things.
