PSA: That new $300 heat shield jacket was a total waste for me
I saw the ads for the 'pro' aluminized jacket and thought it would be a game changer for working near the cupola. It cost me about three hundred bucks after tax. The first week, the stitching on the arms started to melt and fray during a long pour. Now it's just sitting in my locker because I'm back to my old, cheaper gear. Has anyone found a heat-resistant work coat that actually holds up?

So what's the point of heat gear that melts, like joseph_green13 said?

Wait, they seriously didn't tell you it can't touch the actual pour? What's even the point of calling it heat gear then, if it falls apart under the one condition you'd need it for? That's just a fancy expensive sweatshirt. Logan's out here talking about care instructions like you're supposed to baby a piece of safety equipment.

Honestly that sounds like a skill issue more than a gear problem. Maybe you were just using it wrong or got a bad batch, because my crew has been using those jackets for months with zero problems. They aren't meant for direct contact with a full pour, you still have to be smart about it. Three hundred bucks is cheap for proper PPE that actually keeps you safe, so maybe you should have read the care instructions better.

What, they didn't mention the jacket is only heat-resistant until you actually wear it near heat? Sounds like they spent all the money on the ads and forgot to make the thing work.
