One bad week in Portland taught me to never skip the kill fee clause

Last March I signed a 12 page contract for a branding project with a startup, no kill fee written in because I figured it was fine. They pulled the plug after 4 days of work, I had already put in 22 hours and got nothing. The project manager said "we just don't need the deliverable anymore" and that was it. Anyone else ended up eating hours because they trusted a handshake over a written termination term?
