Client told me my home office looked unprofessional in a Zoom call

I had a big client meeting last Tuesday and they straight up said they could hear my kids in the background and saw my messy bookshelf. I was pretty embarrassed but it made me rethink my whole setup. I moved my desk to the spare bedroom with a solid door and put up some cheap acoustic panels from Amazon for $40. Has anyone else had a client comment on your workspace and change things because of it?

The $40 acoustic panels move is smart, I did basically the same thing after my cat walked across my keyboard during a pricing negotiation. But here is my real question for you - did those panels actually fix the sound or did you just feel better about the setup? I ask because I put up some foam squares and my audio still picks up my neighbor mowing his lawn through the window. I wonder if paying a little more for proper soundproofing curtains or a real sound booth might be the only way to fully kill background noise for good.

Acoustic panels kill echoes, not lawnmowers.

One of my long time clients once said they could hear my washing machine going in the background during a really important call. I was mortified. After that I moved my whole desk into the smallest bedroom, put up a curtain rod with a heavy blackout curtain over the door just for extra sound, and bought a used room divider on Facebook Marketplace for like $25. It changed everything for the better.
