I spent $800 on a fancy tax software package that my accountant said was completely wrong for my setup.
I'm torn between thinking I should have done more research first and feeling like the software company should have clearer warnings, so what's your take on vetting financial tools before you buy?

Blame the software company for that one. Their marketing always makes things sound like a one-size-fits-all solution. You have to check the fine print or call their sales line and grill them about your specific situation.

Yeah, grilling sales is key. I'd even ask them to email you a summary saying it's a good fit, so you have proof if it goes wrong.

Ouch, $800 for software that doesn't even work for you? That's brutal. Sam_cooper has the right idea about getting things in writing from sales. I'd be on the phone demanding a refund, honestly. Their job is to know their product's limits. It's like buying a car they swear fits your whole soccer team, then finding out it's a two-seater. You gotta ask the super specific, boring questions they hope you won't.
