Warning: The basalt columns at Devil's Postpile are way more impressive in person

I finally made it out to Mammoth Lakes in California last month and hiked down to see the Postpile. The pictures online do not show how tight and perfect those hexagons are. I stood there for a good twenty minutes just looking at the pattern. It's like a giant stone honeycomb that got pushed up and then sliced off. Has anyone else been totally surprised by a rock formation when they saw it up close?

Yeah, my phone camera just gave up and cried when I tried to take a picture of it.

My old Samsung did that at my cousin's wedding last year, just showed a black screen when the cake came out. Ray_burns, I had to borrow my aunt's flip phone from 2008, and the pictures looked like bigfoot sightings. Felt like I time traveled for a minute there lol.

What used to look like a boring rock wall in pictures? Seeing the Giant's Causeway in person totally changed my mind... the scale and the pattern just hits different when you're standing right next to it. Pictures never really get that across.
