Spent 3 years overpaying for a Bronze plan before a random Reddit comment made me check the tax credit calculator

I was at a friend's barbecue last July when his cousin who works at a clinic asked if I actually filled out the subsidy form on Healthcare.gov, and I had no idea that was even a thing for freelancers.

OMG same, I was paying full price for like two years before I accidentally found the tax credit thing.

Yeah the "accidentally found" part is real. I started asking at the counter if they had any discounts and that's how I found out about the family plan rate.

Wait, hold up - you were on a Bronze plan for THREE YEARS before that? That's like, that's insane to me. I mean I get not knowing about the subsidies at first but three years is a whole different level. @sanchez.julia had that same experience asking at the counter though, right? It's crazy how the system just doesn't tell you "hey by the way you might qualify for help". I swear if I hadn't stumbled on a random Reddit thread I'd still be overpaying too, it's like they hide the good stuff on purpose.
