The week my desk shelf became a cat highway
I spent last Wednesday afternoon building this nice floating shelf setup for my monitors, really proud of the cable routing. By Thursday morning my cat discovered it's the perfect spot to launch onto my desk and knock over my coffee mug. Broke a $40 wireless mouse and now I have to redo the whole layout with a solid barrier on the edge. Has anyone else had to pet-proof their workspace mid-renovation?

Nah man I totally DISAGREE with this whole pet proofing mindset. You built a desk shelf setup and your cat showed you it's actually a MULTI-PURPOSE feature now. Just embrace the chaos and put your coffee in a travel mug with a lid. Cats are gonna do what they want and trying to block them is a losing battle. I actually like having my cat jump up on my desk, it makes the whole workspace feel more alive. You spent time on cable management not a cat fortress so just roll with it and save yourself the headache of building barriers your cat will eventually outsmart anyway.

Did you try putting double sided tape on the shelf edge? That stopped my cat from treating my desk like a race track and it didn't ruin the look either. Honestly, velcro strips work too if you don't want sticky residue all over your nice setup. Ngl, you probably need to rethink your coffee placement too, I moved mine to a corner far from any launch zones. Cats really don't care how much time you spent on cable management, they just see a new parkour route. Tbh, I had to build a whole little fence out of binder clips and cardboard before my cat finally gave up.

The double sided tape trick worked for my setup but only for about a week before my cat figured out she could just walk around it. What actually solved it for me was getting a cheap roll of clear shelf liner with that grippy rubber texture on the bottom side and cutting it into a 4 inch strip along the whole desk edge. My cat hates the feel of it on her paws and she won't even jump up there anymore. I also put a small cactus on the corner near where she used to land because she's afraid of pointy things. Had to rearrange my whole monitor setup too because she knocked over a lamp on day three. The funny part is now I have this weird barrier zone that actually looks intentional because I matched the liner color to my desk.
