The LLC registration I rushed through actually cost me extra
I filed my LLC paperwork online in Arizona last year. Chose the standard 30 day processing instead of the 7 day rush because I was trying to save $50. Turned out the name I picked was too similar to an existing business. Had to pay another $85 to file an amendment and wait another 2 weeks. Has anyone else had trouble with name conflicts when filing on their own?

Oh man, I feel your pain! I did the same thing with my Texas LLC and the state rejected my first name because it was one letter off from an existing business. By the time I figured out a backup name and resubmitted, I'd wasted both the rush fee and an extra week of waiting on their stupid phone system. It's like they design this stuff to trip you up on purpose.

The part about "it's like they design this stuff to trip you up on purpose" really hits home. I think the real trick is most people don't check the Secretary of State's database before they even start the forms. I spent a whole afternoon just scrolling through Arizona's business name list on their website, found three names I liked that were totally free, and filed one of those. Saved me from having to redo anything.

Actually, most states let you reserve a business name online instead of scrolling through the full database.
