Card reader died on a Friday night, saved the sale with a paper pad
I was at a pop-up market in Austin, TX on a Friday evening when my card reader just froze mid-swipe. Customer had a $240 order and I had zero backup hardware. I grabbed the old carbon copy paper from my car, wrote the total clearly, and asked for their email to send a payment link from my phone. They paid in 10 minutes and I learned to carry a manual receipt book for every event since. Anyone else had to go old school when tech failed at the worst time?

Grabbed my old box of carbon slips from under the register at a flea market once when the WiFi went down for the whole block... ended up writing down someone's credit card number on paper and running it through my phone as a manual entry after the signal came back. Felt super sketchy doing it, but the guy was cool about it and even joked that I should add a fingerprint scanner to my receipt book. Then I got to thinking about how my grandma used to sell Tupperware with just a paper order form and a handshake... that woman probably closed more sales than half the apps out there. Now I keep a little spiral notebook in my car that I use as a backup for tracking orders, and honestly it's saved me more times than I can count.

and honestly that whole thing hit close to home for me, I used to run a small vintage booth and had the same kinda panic when the card reader died on a busy Saturday. I ended up writing down sales in a little notebook I kept for inventory, just names and amounts, then typed everything into my phone later that night. The clunky part was matching up who bought what when I got back online, but it was way better than losing the sale entirely. That spiral notebook thing is real, I still keep one in my glovebox for vet visits and random stuff, it just works when nothing else does.

That carbon slip story got me thinking, because I used to be all about going digital for everything and thought paper backups were just old school clutter. But watching you scramble and still make the sale while the whole block was offline kinda flipped my view on that. Now I get why having a simple, no battery needed fallback is not just handy but actually smart.
