Paid $120 for a wood carving starter kit and it collected dust for 8 months

I got really into watching those wood carving videos on YouTube last winter and decided to give it a try. Dropped about $120 on a Morakniv hook knife, some basswood blocks, and a cut-proof glove. Problem is, I opened it all up once, made one shaky cut that split the wood, and then just put the box in the back of my closet. Every few weeks I'd see it and feel guilty, but I never got back to it. Finally last weekend I forced myself to sit down and just make something ugly on purpose. Ended up carving a little spoon shaped thing that looks like a deformed shoe, but it actually felt good to finish it. Has anyone else bought hobby supplies and then found it hard to get past that first failure?

Man that first failure stings but you just gotta push through it and carve something ugly.

Man that's so true though. It's like when you mess up a recipe the first time but now you know exactly what not to do next round. There's something freeing about making a total mess because you learn way more from that ugly lump than from a perfect one.
