That thrifted embroidery hoop I bought last week had mold hiding in the wood grain

After three straight days of cross-stitching, I woke up with a rash on my fingers and realized the $2 hoop from a garage sale in Phoenix had been growing mildew inside the frame the whole time - has anyone else gotten burned by hidden damage in secondhand craft supplies?

Man, that's nasty. I had the same thing happen with a wooden picture frame I picked up at Goodwill. Ended up having to toss the whole thing because the mold had worked its way deep into the grain and I couldn't get it out. You're right about the vinegar trick though, it's hit or miss.

oh man, that's rough. i've been through almost the exact same thing with a vintage embroidery hoop from a flea market. the wood grain looked fine but after a few days my hands got all itchy and red. what helped me was wiping the hoop down with a mix of white vinegar and water before using it - kills the mold without ruining the wood. also, i started sealing my thrifted hoops with a clear craft varnish now, like the matte spray kind they sell at michael's. it keeps moisture out and makes them way easier to clean. for the rash, cortisone cream cleared mine up in like two days, but if it spreads definitely see a doctor. idk if it's worth the hassle for a $2 hoop but i still do it because some of those garage sale finds have such nice vintage wood, you know?

Yes, exactly this @thomasb41 - vinegar soak saved a few of my finds too.
