Shoutout to the cashier at Kroger who pointed out I was buying name-brand everything

After she rang up my $187 grocery total and asked if I wanted to try the store brand cereal for half the price, I checked my receipt and realized I had wasted over $40 on packaging alone, so has anyone else ever had a stranger save them money on the spot?

Man, that's a good reminder right there. I've definitely been in that spot before where you just grab what's familiar and don't think twice about the price tag. One thing I'd gently push back on though - it's not always just "packaging" you're paying for. Sometimes the name brand stuff actually has a different recipe, like more sugar or a different blend of ingredients, so the taste can be off with the store brand. Your mileage may vary on that, of course. I'd say it's worth a shot to try a store brand once or twice, but don't feel bad if you don't love it. Either way, that cashier did you a solid by pointing it out.

i mean is it really that deep though? it's just coffee creamer or whatever. people act like you're committing a crime if you buy the store brand. i grab the cheap one and it's fine. doesn't ruin my morning. and yeah sometimes the recipe is a little different but who cares. it's not like you're eating at a five star restaurant. cashier probably just wanted to make conversation not save your life.
