Talked to my neighbor the programmer about my burnout and he made one comment that stuck

I was complaining to my neighbor Dave last Tuesday about how I never feel done with work, even at 10 PM. He said "you treat freelancing like being on call 24/7 but we programmers log off at 5 and nothing explodes." Has anyone else had a non-freelancer say something simple that totally reframed how you work?

Uh no, most programmers definitely don't log off at 5.

Bet the neighbor logs off at 5 because someone else is stuck fixing bugs at 10 PM for him.

Had the same thing happen at my last job, guy would leave at 4:30 sharp and I'd be fixing his mistakes until midnight.
