Quarterly estimated tax payments aren't that hard once you actually do them right
Everyone told me to just set aside 30% of every invoice, but I tried the IRS Direct Pay system instead of guessing. After 3 quarters of using their automated calendar, my April bill was $400 less than last year. Has anyone else found the official tools actually work better than the popular advice?

My buddy tried the 30% rule and ended up overpaying by a ton, so now he's stuck waiting on a refund.

Isn't it funny how we try to simplify things with rules like that, only to get burned? It seems like half the time these shortcuts are just someone's guess that caught on. I notice the same pattern with all kinds of stuff, like life hacks or budgeting tips online. People share them like they're foolproof, but real life is way messier than a quick rule. Your buddy's stuck waiting, but at least he learned the hard way that one size doesn't fit most situations.

I mean, "stuck waiting on a refund" sounds annoying but is it really that big of a deal? Your buddy will get his money back eventually, it's not like he lost a kidney or something.
