Took me 4 years to realize I was underpricing because I was scared, not because it was fair

A repeat client casually mentioned they budgeted 3 times what I quoted for a logo design. That was the moment I knew my whole "low rates get more work" logic was just me being terrified of rejection. Anybody else have a client accidentally reveal you were charging way too little?

My buddy Mike does freelance web design on the side. Charged a local cafe $500 for their whole site. Two years later the owner let slip they paid the last guy $2,000 for just a landing page. Mike said he felt like a complete idiot.

The $500 Mike charged is actually reasonable for a side project with a local cafe. Small businesses often don't have $2,000 budgets for a landing page, and if he got them a working site that met their needs, he provided good value. The $2,000 the other guy charged probably included things like professional photography, custom illustrations, or ongoing maintenance that Mike's simple setup didn't have. Plus, Mike likely learned the ropes on that project and can charge more on his next one. Undercharging on your first few jobs is how you build a portfolio and get referrals that lead to better paying work later.

$500 for a whole site is wild cheap though, even for a beginner.
