A client told me my portfolio was boring and it stung

Last month a potential gig said my work looked like "every other fence installer's site" so I cut the generic shots of finished yards and added step-by-step photos showing how I brace corners and set posts. Has anyone else overhauled their portfolio after one harsh comment and seen real results?

Wait is this really that deep though? I feel like every small business owner gets some random criticism they blow way out of proportion and then rearranges their whole life around it. That one client who called your work boring probably forgot about you five minutes after they hit send. I had someone tell me my landscaping photos looked "too filtered" once and I spent three weeks reshooting everything only to have zero change in my booking rate. Sometimes a harsh comment is just a person having a bad day not a sign you need to overhaul everything.

That client who called you boring probably hires based on price not quality.

That line about looking like "every other fence installer's site" hits hard because it's probably true for most of us starting out. I've noticed a bigger pattern in how people judge work these days they don't want perfect finished photos they want to see the messy thinking behind them. It's like how everyone posts the vacation highlight reel on social media but nobody shows the flat tire or the wrong turn that taught them something. When I ditched the polished stock-style shots for honest process photos showing the mistakes and fixes I started getting more calls from people who actually understood what I was offering. Sometimes the best thing a harsh comment does is force you to stop blending in and show what you actually know.
