I finally figured out why my gutters kept overflowing after heavy rain
Turns out I was ignoring the downspout extensions, not just the gutters themselves. After last week's storm dumped 2 inches in an hour and water pooled right next to my foundation, I spent $30 on longer extensions at Lowes and it solved the problem instantly. Has anyone else missed this obvious fix?

It's funny how we zero in on one part of a problem and miss the whole picture. I'm a big believer in checking the simple stuff first, and this is a classic case of looking at the pipes but not where they end. @barbaradavis brought up that exact point about not seeing damage beforehand - I bet a lot of folks have a damp crawl space or a little foundation crack they just chalk up to 'old house problems' when it's really just water not getting far enough away. Your mileage may vary, but in my experience, a lot of home fixes come down to following the water trail all the way to its finish, not just the most obvious spot.

Jumped on this same problem last spring. I had been cleaning the gutters twice a year and still getting water pooling near the patio. Turned out my downspout extensions were too short and the water was just dumping right next to the foundation. I swapped them for those flex ones that you can adjust the length on, think they were like $25 at Home Depot. Made a massive difference after the first big storm. Did you see any water damage near the house before you swapped yours?

Oh man, the short downspout thing got me too! I was doing the same routine, cleaning gutters like clockwork, but water was still creeping up near the foundation. I finally just added those same flex extensions and it was night and day, no more puddles after a good rain.
