Overheard a guy at Ace Hardware talking about his home office lighting trick

I was grabbing some paint for my living room yesterday and this older dude was telling the cashier about how he rigged up a $15 shop light from the clearance rack above his desk. Said it cut his eye strain in half after working from home for 3 years. I got curious and asked him about it, turned out he just aimed it at the wall behind his monitor instead of directly at his face. Tried the same thing with a clamp light I had sitting in my garage and honestly my setup looks way better now. No more weird shadows on my face during video calls. Has anyone else done something like bouncing light off a wall? Wondering if there is a better way to do this without spending a bunch on those fancy desk lamps.

Nah, bouncing light off the wall is pretty standard, it's called indirect lighting and it's way easier on the eyes.

Easier on the eyes" is right. It's like how people do stuff without even knowing why. Same thing with ceiling fans in the summer - everyone runs them counterclockwise to blow air down, but most people can't tell you why that works. @taylor_wells got the right idea, it's just people overthink lighting. They buy those harsh LED strips for their desk and wonder why they get headaches after an hour. Meanwhile my buddy has a lamp facing the wall in his living room and it feels like a totally different room. Small stuff like that adds up.

Indirect light really softens everything up.
