I asked a question here three years ago and still think about the answer

It was about how to handle a friend who always asks for free work. Someone replied, 'Charge them your rate or give it as a real gift, no in-between.' I did that and it fixed the whole awkward thing. Has anyone else had a piece of advice from here stick with them for years?

Serious question, my accountant said I should be saving 40% of every freelance check for taxes.

We were going over my numbers from last quarter and he pointed out I'd only set aside 25%. That extra 15% buffer is for the self-employment tax hit I always forget about. How do you all handle your quarterly tax payments without feeling broke?

Tried two different ways to find local freelancers and one was a total bust

For the past three months, I tried just showing up at a big, open-plan coworking spot in Portland, hoping to bump into people. It was always too loud and everyone had headphones on. Then I started going to the specific "Freelancer Coffee" meetup they host every other Tuesday. I met two graphic designers and a copywriter in the first hour because it was actually set up for talking. Has anyone else found that structured meetups beat just hanging around a space?

Hit 5000 hours on the same tower crane and the logbook felt weird

I was filling out my daily sheet on a job in Cincinnati and realized I'd crossed that mark without noticing. It made me think about how much wear the machine must have taken compared to my first day on it. Do you guys track your hours per machine or just total time?

Remember when we used to mix mortar by hand on the job?

I was laying a brick garden wall in Denver last summer and my mixer motor gave out halfway through a 60-pound batch. Had to finish the mix with a hoe and a bucket, just like my granddad taught me. What's the oldest piece of gear or method you still fall back on when things go wrong?

Update: My local coworking spot in Phoenix went from dead quiet to packed in 6 months

They started hosting free 'Freelancer Friday' coffee meetups every week, and now the whole place is buzzing with people actually talking and sharing leads. Before that, it was just a room full of people with headphones on, not saying a word. What's one thing that made your own coworking space feel like a real community?
