Can we talk about how anime openings used to be 90 seconds and now some are barely 60?
Went back to watch some shows from 2005 on my old external drive last weekend and those openings felt like full mini movies, 90 seconds with a whole story in them. Now a bunch of the new stuff I stream runs 60 seconds or less and it feels like the song is cut off before it even gets going, maybe because of licensing or pacing for the 12 episode season. Is it just me or did openings actually get shorter, and does anyone know why?
Did you ever notice how openings from that era basically told you the whole plot of the show in a minute and a half? I used to shrug this off and figure it was just me getting older and impatient, but then I actually timed a few and the drop is real. Old ones ran a full 90, new ones are lucky to hit 60, and yeah, a lot of it comes down to licensing costs and cramming the season into 12 eps. Streaming made it worse too, since shows get skipped or trimmed for ads overseas. I was wrong to write it off as nostalgia, the openings really did get shorter.
