Question about the episode count for the original Fullmetal Alchemist

I was looking up something on MyAnimeList last night and saw the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist series only has 51 episodes. For some reason I always thought it was closer to 60 or 70, like a full shonen run. Am I the only one who gets the episode counts mixed up between the original and Brotherhood?

I read somewhere that the 2003 version actually had a different ending because they caught up to the manga and had to make up their own story... that's probably why it feels shorter than Brotherhood which had more material to adapt.

idk @paulnguyen i feel like the opposite is actually true. the 2003 version had more room to explore its own ideas since it didnt have to stick to the manga's roadmap, so it covered a lot of ground in a different way. brotherhood rushed through the early stuff to get to the new material, which made it feel longer but also kinda scattered in places.
