Vent: A guy at the Austin anime meetup told me subs are 'objectively better' and I finally pushed back
We were at the pinball place on Burnet Road, maybe 15 of us, and he spent 20 minutes arguing that dubs ruin every show, so I asked him how many dubs he had watched in full and he went quiet at 2. I get that subs are the default for most people but saying one is 'objectively better' when you have barely touched the other side is just repeating a take you heard online. Curious if anyone here actually switches between both depending on the show, or is it subs all the way for you?
Ha, of course he watched 2 dubs and suddenly he's an expert on the whole thing. That is like me eating two tacos and saying I speak Spanish. The funny part is 2 is generous, half the time these guys count one episode of a dub they walked past on a friend's TV. I switch back and forth all the time, subs when I want the original voices and dubs when I'm eating dinner and don't want to read. Some dubs are rough, sure, but some are flat out great and a few I'd pick over the sub any day. Dude just wanted to feel smart at the pinball place, which is a bold move when you're standing next to a machine blinking TILT.
So what happens when a show has a dub that people rave about, does he just refuse to even try it or does he make up a reason why it is secretly bad? That is the test right there, because if the answer is always no then he is not judging dubs, he is just protecting a take he borrowed. I want to know if he has ever gone back and rewatched a show in the other version and actually changed his mind.
