A 30 year tech in Boise told me to stop guessing at control board failures and it's been eating at me
He said he sees techs swap 3 boards a month at $180 a pop when the real issue is a $12 thermistor reading just slightly off spec, and he asked me when the last time I actually measured resistance instead of just trusting the error code was.
That thermistor thing is real but the "3 boards a month" number sounds off to me. At $180 a pop that's $540 in parts per tech, and no supply house is eating that cost when the board comes back as a no-fault return. Most shops I know test the board on the bench before they even send a guy out, so the swap never happens. The part your Boise guy got right is the resistance check. A thermistor drifting 200 ohms won't always throw a code, but it'll make the board read the wrong temp and cycle weird. Grab a meter and ohm it out cold, then hit it with a heat gun and watch the value move. Takes five minutes and saves you the callback.
