Just realized I was using the wrong size socket on a stubborn dryer pulley for years

I was at a job in a basement in Dayton last month, fighting with a 10mm bolt on a Maytag dryer drum pulley. The customer, an older guy who used to work on cars, watched me for a minute and then said, 'Son, that's a 3/8 inch, not a 10. They're close, but you'll strip it.' He was right, and I felt like an idiot. I switched sockets and it came right off. Has anyone else had a simple tool mix-up that cost you way too much time on a simple fix?

That metric versus standard mix-up is a classic trap. I've seen it happen with new guys on HVAC units where a 6mm and 1/4 inch look identical. The real cost isn't just the time, it's the damaged part you now have to explain to the homeowner. It makes the whole job look sloppy even if you fix it. A guy I worked with kept a mismatched bolt stuck to his toolbox as a reminder.

Yeah, that bolt on the toolbox is a solid move. It's the kind of mistake you only make once if you're smart.
