Gotta gently disagree on the bloating thing - that's usually from gut bacteria reacting to food, not tap water minerals. Placebo or not though, if the alkaline water keeps you from crashing I'd say roll with it.

Read a tech bulletin from Dover that mentioned using a thin feeler gauge for the same job, but the laser pointer sounds way easier. @karenwest is right about the different parts, but it's nice to have a trick that works for both checks once you know the difference.
