I was sure those USB killer devices were just a myth until I saw one fry a coworker's laptop
A guy in our IT department plugged a random flash drive into his work machine and it died instantly - no smoke, just a dead motherboard. Are these really that common now, or was he just unlucky?

Those things are way more common than people realize, it's like any cheap tech from Amazon can be a weapon these days. Kinda scary how we just trust random USB ports and drives without thinking.

Cheap tech from Amazon" - a guy I used to know tested one on his own laptop just to see.

That one guy had a Dell XPS from 2019 and the USB killer fried his motherboard in about 4 seconds flat. The damage was permanent and the repair cost more than the laptop was worth. @juliaa65 is totally right about how much we just plug random stuff into our computers without a second thought. Those cheap USB hubs and chargers on Amazon can also have hidden malware or shoddy wiring that shorts out your ports. It's wild how a $12 device can destroy a $1000 machine like it's nothing. I always tell people to stick with known brands for anything that connects to power or data.
