I just read that the Hubble Ultra Deep Field image contains about 10,000 galaxies in a patch of sky the size of a grain of sand held at arm's length.
Found that in an old astronomy magazine and it blew my mind, how do you even begin to process that scale?

Just a picture" is what I used to think too, but that fact about the grain of sand made it click for me.

Doesn't it feel like perspective is everything once you finally get it? @ben_fisher I had that same moment with the sand thing, it really does make the picture mean more. It's wild how one small shift can change how you see the whole world.

Sometimes it helps to just look at the night sky for a while. You start to see more stars, and the whole thing feels bigger and quieter. That feeling is the scale, right there.

It reminds me how we walk past the same cracks in the sidewalk every day without noticing them.
