Stacked frames on my M51 image all wrong for years
I used to just layer photos on top of each other. No alignment at all. Finally tried DeepSkyStacker last March and saw what I was missing. Who else wasted months on bad stacking before getting it right?

You just stacked them on top with NO alignment at ALL?! For YEARS?! That is WILD to me. I can't even imagine what those images looked like.

Yeah, "WILD to me" is exactly right. I feel you, because I did the same thing for way too long. I would just stack my photos in Photoshop without any alignment and wonder why everything looked like a blurry mess. It wasn't until a friend on a forum told me I had to use a stacking tool with alignment that I realized what I was missing. So honestly, you're not alone, and I think a lot of us just figured it out the hard way back then.

Wait, you mean you're SUPPOSED to align them? @colegarcia I thought everybody just eyeballed it like I did back in the day. My old star trails looked like someone dropped the tripod halfway through haha.
