Pro tip: a painter in Fresno told me he wets his masking tape before pulling it and I finally tried it
I was at a shop in Fresno picking up a bumper last Tuesday and watched this older painter pull tape off a fresh clear coat like it was nothing, no jagged edges at all. I asked what his trick was and he said he wets the tape edge with a little water before pulling, lets it sit about 30 seconds, then pulls slow at a 45 degree angle. I tried it on a silver Tacoma quarter panel Thursday morning and the line came out clean on the first pull, no touch up needed. Before this I was burning through a whole roll of 3M 233+ on some jobs just fixing ripped edges. The water seems to soften the adhesive just enough without letting it bleed under, at least on the 2 jobs I did so far. Anyone else do this or is there a better way to keep tape lines sharp on fresh clear?
