Saw a guy at the parts counter trying to fix a quarter panel with just body filler

I was picking up some seam sealer at the local NAPA yesterday and the guy in front of me bought a single gallon of filler. He told the clerk he was going to 'build up' a big dent on his truck's rear quarter. I didn't say anything, but that's a repair that's going to crack and fail in under a year. It needs metal work first, period. How do you guys handle seeing stuff like that, do you ever step in and say something?

That's exactly why it's such a tough spot to be in. You know it's gonna fail, but telling a stranger they're wrong almost never goes well. I usually only say something if they're asking the clerk for advice and getting bad info, then I might chime in. Otherwise you just have to let people learn the hard way sometimes, even though it sucks to watch.

My own quarter panel repair taught me that lesson the hard, and expensive, way.

What did yours end up costing? I tried to fix a dent in my door myself once and it looked way worse, had to pay a pro to redo it all.
