My uncle told me to always use a torque wrench on aluminum heads, I thought he was being too careful

He said 'strip one thread in a 5.3 Vortec and you'll learn', and I did exactly that on a Silverado last week. Cost me three hours and a thread repair kit to fix my mistake. Anyone else have a 'too careful' tip that turned out to be dead right?

Learned that lesson the hard way myself.

Yeah, that's a rough one to learn through experience. Been there too, pat_harris. It sticks with you way more than if someone just tells you. Makes you change how you do things going forward. Honestly wish some lessons didn't come with such a high cost. Solidarity, for real.

Isn't that how most good advice works?

Ever hear the one about the guy who skipped the torque sequence on his intake manifold? @the_olivia gets it, some lessons just cost you a weekend.
