Tried to help a buddy replace his alternator last week and he argued with me for 20 minutes about the belt routing
Guy watched one YouTube video and swore the tensioner went the other way, even after I showed him the diagram on my phone. Anybody else deal with friends who think they know better than someone doing this for 3 years?

Three years of watching belts spin doesn't make you an engineer.

Read a mechanic forum where a guy said belt routing arguments cause more fights than any other repair job. Three years of doing this means you've seen the tensioner work a hundred times, his one YouTube video doesnt beat that. People get real attached to being wrong once theyve made up their mind about it.

Notice this exact same thing happening with recipes online. Someone will swear their grandma's meatloaf is the only correct way, then five people jump in saying "actually, you have to use breadcrumbs, not crackers" or "375 degrees is way too hot, you're drying it out." People get SO attached to what they know from their own kitchen or their own garage that anything different feels like a personal attack. It's like once someone's convinced themselves their way is the best way, they'll fight tooth and nail over the tiniest detail, whether it's a serpentine belt or a pinch of salt.
