Debate: used to dig post holes by hand with a clamshell digger until last spring when I rented a gas auger for a 16-foot fence job in Tulsa and finished in 2 hours instead of 2 days

Which side are you on - old school sweat equity or renting power tools for speed - and has anyone else switched after one big project made the cost totally worth it?

Used to be all about that old school sweat equity honestly. Thought renting power tools was just throwing money away for no reason. Then I had to put in a small retaining wall and did the gravel base by hand with a tamper for like six hours. Rented a power compactor for the next section and finished in 45 minutes. Totally changed my mind right there, sometimes the cost is worth it for your back and your time.

100% agree @iris_barnes87. I did the same thing last year with a concrete mixer. Bought a cheap one for a patio job and it burned out halfway through. Rented a proper one from Home Depot for 80 bucks and finished the whole pour before lunch. Sometimes you just gotta pay for the right tool instead of fighting your gear all day.

You just reminded me of my own lesson with a pressure washer. Bought a cheap electric one for cleaning the driveway and it was basically a glorified garden hose. Finally borrowed a buddy's gas powered unit and it stripped years of grime off in like 20 minutes. I'm with you on the rental thing, especially for concrete work. That $80 saves your back and your sanity.
