Decided to keep the old maple tree instead of cutting it down

When we moved in, the big silver maple in the back was a mess, dropping branches every storm. My wife wanted it gone for a new patio. I got a quote to remove it, which was about $2,500. I decided to just have it trimmed and cabled by a guy I know instead, costing $800. That was five years ago, and now it's the best shade in the whole yard, perfect for the kids to play under. Anyone else have a tree they were glad they kept?

What about checking the roots too?

Our old neighbor had a massive oak that split right down the middle after a storm. The arborist said the roots on one side were totally rotten, kind of like what iris483 is getting at. They had to take the whole thing out, cost them almost four grand.

Remember that huge willow my grandpa refused to cut down?

Good call. Silver maples are actually pretty weak trees though. Might want to check those cables soon.
