I finally gave up on my old way of watering the lawn
For years I just ran the sprinkler for an hour every other evening, but my water bill in July hit $180 and the grass still looked patchy. I switched to a cheap timer from the hardware store and now water for 20 minutes at 5am, three days a week, and it's already greener. What's your watering schedule like for a healthy yard?

Oh man, that's a huge difference! I was in the same boat. I found watering deep but less often was the trick. My schedule is about 30 minutes per zone, just twice a week, super early in the morning. It really lets the water soak down to the roots instead of just wetting the surface and evaporating.

Remembered my neighbor trying to water his lawn for five minutes every day last summer. The grass turned this weird yellow-brown color, like cheap carpet. He finally asked a guy at the garden center, who told him the exact same thing about deep watering.

Yeah, I read somewhere that watering in the early morning is key because the wind is usually down and the sun isn't hot enough to just burn it all off. That quick daily sprinkle just makes the roots lazy and stay near the surface.
