Just realized my neighbor's fire pit setup is way better than mine after a cookout in Austin

They had this sunken stone ring with built-in benches, and the smoke just went up instead of blowing in our faces all night. Mine is a basic metal bowl on some pavers, and it always feels like a fight to enjoy it. What's a good way to fix a smokey pit without spending a ton?
