My grandpa's push mower vs my $400 one, and honestly his was better
When I bought my first house in 2018 I went straight to the store and dropped $400 on a self-propelled mower with a cup holder and headlights, while my grandpa's old reel mower from the 70s just sat in his shed. After two summers of fighting that thing on the hills in my yard, I borrowed his for a week and finished the whole lawn in 20 minutes without waking up the whole street. Does anyone else still use an old reel mower, or am I just chasing my childhood here?
My dad's 1972 reel mower still cuts better than anything I've bought new. Just keep the blades sharp and hit the yard twice a week in spring when it grows fast. You're not chasing childhood, those things just work.
