Used coffee grounds around my hydrangeas and they went from 2 blooms to about 14
My hydrangeas out back by the fence barely did anything for two seasons, just a couple sad blooms each summer. Started dumping our used coffee grounds around the base every morning back in April, maybe half an inch thick, and by July I counted 14 blooms on one bush. The soil here in Charlotte is mostly red clay, so I think the grounds helped loosen it up and feed them slowly. Has anyone tried this on roses too? I don't want to mess up the ones along the driveway.
I always figured coffee grounds were mostly hype, just something folks dump because it feels useful, but 2 blooms to 14 is hard to argue with. @dylanwells has the right call on testing one rose first, since roses can be fussy and you don't want to gamble the whole row on a maybe. Now I'm second guessing my own lazy habit of pitching them in the trash.
Half an inch thick every morning is way more dedication than I've ever shown my garden, my coffee grounds usually just end up in the trash because I forget about them by 8am. Good to know it actually pays off though, 2 blooms to 14 is a huge jump. That red clay is no joke, so breaking it up with something free makes a lot of sense. I'd be careful with the roses since they can be picky about acid, maybe test it on one bush first instead of the whole driveway row. Worst case you lose one rose and learn something, best case you get a wall of flowers.
