I finally made pie crust with vegetable shortening and it was flakier than any butter version I've tried

Why does everyone swear by butter for pie dough when shortening gives a better texture in my experience?

My last pie crust was so tough you could've used it as a hockey puck. I followed a fancy butter recipe to the letter. Maybe I need to swallow my pride and try shortening like you did.

No way, the trick is really cold butter in my book, @colegarcia. You just don't get the same flavor with shortening.
