PSA: Check your oven's bottom element before a big bake

I was making my grandma's honey cake recipe yesterday, a whole three-layer deal for a birthday. Put the first pan in, set the timer, and after 20 minutes... nothing. It was still raw batter. The bottom heating coil had just gone out completely. Had to finish the layers one at a time using only the broiler, which was a total mess. Anyone know a good appliance repair person in the Tacoma area, or should I just start shopping for a new oven?

Just buy a new oven already.

Easy for you to say, my bank account is still crying from the last time I bought a loaf of bread. My oven and I have a toxic relationship, but it's cheaper than couples therapy. Besides, the smoke alarm gives the kitchen a real sense of danger. I'm just waiting for it to finally die so I can have a proper funeral for it.

I mean, maybe it's just me but I feel like david_palmer's oven has become a weird kitchen pet at this point. It's got its own personality and everything. Buying a new one is easy to say, but you lose all that history, you know? Like, does a new oven know exactly how to burn one side of a pizza just how you secretly like it? Probably not.
