Can we talk about switching from clipper-over-comb to shear-over-comb
I used to do all my fading with clipper-over-comb for years because that's how I learned in barber school back in 2018. But about six months ago I started using shear-over-comb for the top and crown area on medium to long hair cuts. It gives me way more control and a softer blend that doesn't look choppy when the hair grows out. The change came after I messed up a guy's cut in Knoxville and he pointed out the lines I left behind with the clippers. Now I only use clipper-over-comb for really short buzz cuts or tight fades. Has anyone else made this switch and noticed a big difference in their finish work?

Took me a whole month to get my clipper-over-comb back after I learned shear-over-comb. It's like my hands forgot everything they knew. The lawnmower thing is real - I had a dude in my chair in Chattanooga and he asked if I was using a different brand of clippers because the blend looked so rough. What fixed it for me was doing five minutes of practice on a mannequin before every shift, just clipper-over-comb only. That muscle memory comes back but you gotta reteach it slow.

I feel you man, that "lawnmower" thing is brutal but so accurate. I had the same struggle when I switched over - for like two weeks every clipper-over-comb cut I did looked like I was mowing the lawn with a hangover. What finally clicked for me was slowing way down on the clipper work and almost treating it like I was doing tiny little taps instead of those long slides I used to do. It's rough when you feel like you're starting over on something you already knew how to do.

Started using shear-over-comb last month and now my clipper-over-comb work looks like a lawnmower hit it.

That "lawnmower" thing you said really stuck with me, @jamesc79. I saw this one barber on YouTube talking about how clipper-over-comb and shear-over-comb use totally different muscle memory, so it makes sense you're struggling. Like, one is all about sliding and the other is more of a tapping motion, you know? idk about you but I found it helped to just stick with one technique per haircut for a while instead of switching back and forth. Maybe try going a full week only doing clipper-over-comb to get that feel back, then ease back into the shears. I mean, it's probably just a temporary weird phase your hands need to work through.
