Overheard a guy say switchbacks are for beginners, now I question my whole route planning

I was refilling water at a trailhead near the Cascades and this older hiker was telling his partner that anyone who sticks to switchbacks is 'just lazy about elevation'. I mean, I get the appeal of straight up, but last weekend I did a 14 mile loop with 3,000 feet of gain and the switchback section kept my knees from screaming the next day. Has anyone else had a route where they ditched the switchbacks and regretted it, or am I just overthinking this?

That week everything that could crack, cracked

Last Tuesday alone I had a slab in Austin spiderweb before I even got the float on it, then the pump truck showed up with an empty hopper because a dispatcher in Dallas mixed up two job sites, and by Friday I was patching the same driveway three times while the homeowner kept asking if the color was supposed to be that light, so has anyone else had a run where you just laugh to keep from throwing your trowel?

The cheap caulk gun that made me a believer in the $30 ones

I grabbed a $4 squeeze tube caulk gun for my bathroom reno in Akron and the bead looked like a pile of toothpaste. After 3 tubes of frustration, I borrowed my neighbor's dripless model and it was night and day, smooth as butter. Has anyone else found that spending a bit more on a basic tool like this is totally worth it?

The airport terminal got quieter about 10 years ago, what actually killed the loud chatter?

I fly through Chicago O'Hare twice a month, and I swear the gate areas used to be a wall of noise in 2014. Now it's dead silent, everyone's staring at their phone. Is it smartphones killing small talk or did airlines redesign the seating to split people up on purpose? What changed it for you, the layout or the tech?

My first crock had no airlock, now I can't go back

Started fermenting kraut back in 2010 with just a cracked bowl and a cloth on top, lost two batches to mold before I figured out the brine trick. Last month I finally grabbed a proper airlock lid at a garage sale in Boise for 3 bucks, and the difference in smell alone is wild. Anyone else still keep a backup crock for the old-school way, or did you all switch over?

Hot take: the 'skip intro' button ruined anime pacing

I was watching a marathon of Cowboy Bebop with my buddy and he hit skip intro every single time. That's 26 episodes of TANK! just gone. I get it for shows with bad intros but skipping the buildup feels like watching a movie with no opening scene.

That expensive bookbinding glue I swore was a gimmick

I've been using plain old PVA for 15 years, so when a guy at the shop in Portland kept pushing this $22 jar of specialty glue, I figured it was just marketing fluff. Last month I had a run of 30 hardcovers where the spines kept cracking after a week, and I finally gave in and bought a jar. I glued up a test batch of 5 books, left them in my car for three days in 90 degree heat, and not a single spine split. Has anyone else been burned by a product they thought was overpriced?

I was stuck bouncing between coffee shops in Chiang Mai for weeks (the horror), then I shelled out $40 for a cheap travel router and a local SIM with unlimited data.
