Realized I was holding my clippers wrong for like 3 years

Honestly, I was doing a basic fade on a regular last week and my hand just started cramping up bad. I looked down and saw my thumb was wrapped all the way around the body, squeezing it like a baseball bat. My mentor from barber school, Mike, always said 'let the tool do the work' but I never got it. I switched to a looser grip, just guiding with my fingers, and the motor sound changed completely. It was smoother and the lines came out cleaner in half the time. Has anyone else had a simple grip change make that big of a difference?

Mike's advice finally clicked for me after two years.

That "unlock a whole new level" feeling @flores.mark mentioned is like when I finally learned to stop pressing down so hard with my pencil when I draw.

Isn't it wild how a small tweak can unlock a whole new level? I saw @matthew_west mention it finally clicking, and that's exactly it. You spend so long fighting the tool with a death grip, trying to force the cut. When you finally relax your hand, it's like the clipper becomes part of your arm instead of something you're wrestling with. That change in motor sound you heard is the proof, it's running free without your hand choking it. It goes from being hard work to feeling almost easy.

That "fighting the tool" feeling is everywhere, like trying to open a jar by just squeezing it harder instead of tapping the lid.
