Appreciation post: A client meeting at a coffee shop in Tacoma showed me two ways to handle a rate talk.
I met a potential client at a small spot on 6th Avenue last week to discuss a website redesign. When I gave my rate of $75 an hour, he immediately said, 'That's a bit steep, can you do a flat project fee instead?' I paused and explained my hourly rate covers revisions and unexpected changes. He pushed back, wanting a fixed price to control his budget. It made me think: is it better to hold firm on an hourly rate for safety, or agree to a flat fee to land the job and build trust? How do you all decide which way to go when a client questions your pricing model?

That coffee shop probably charges five bucks for a latte, so your rate seems fair. Maybe he should worry about his drink budget first.

Actually, the lattes there start at $4.25, but your point still stands.

Hannahj49 has a point about the drink budget. People will pay five bucks for coffee but complain about fair prices for real work. Makes you wonder what they value more.
