The guy who told me to never show my lowest rate first was right, but also wrong

I had a buddy who runs a landscaping biz tell me to always quote higher than what I'd actually take. So I tried it on a cleaning job in St. Paul, told them $450 and they walked. Then I tried the opposite, gave my real rock bottom price of $300 first, and they hired me on the spot. Which approach actually works better for you all, starting high to leave room or just being honest from the jump?

Did you try meeting somewhere in the middle like $375?

Did you try offering $350 and see if they bite at $375?

The type of client changes whether either approach works though.
