Found out my local shop charges $80 for a spoke tension meter check
Was reading a forum post last night and figured out I could just borrow one from the co-op for free. Has anyone else found hidden costs in basic bike tools that surprised you?

My buddy Mark dropped $120 last spring for a shop to true his wheels before a big race, then found out the guy literally just tightened a few spokes with a spoke wrench he already had at home. He bought a cheap truing stand off Craigslist for like $40 after that and now he handles all his own wheel stuff, saving way more than the few bucks he spent. Those "quick checks" feel harmless until you add up the total over a season.

Honestly, I found out my LBS was charging $30 just to check chain wear with a tool that costs like eight bucks online. Ngl, I started buying my own basic stuff after that and now I just watch YouTube videos whenever I need to figure something out. Tbh, those hidden fees add up fast if you don't catch them early.
