Spent 2 years greasing freehub pawls with the wrong lube and a guy in Minneapolis took one look
I was at this co-op in Minneapolis last month and a guy named Dale watched me pack a freehub with white lithium. He started laughing and pulled out a little bottle of Dumonde Tech and said "that grease is why your pawls stick every February." I had been doing it that way for 2 years on my own commuter and just thought the cold was the problem. He showed me the pawls were dragging because the thick stuff turns to glue below 20 degrees. Now I use the light oil and the hub buzzes like it should. Any of you still running heavy grease in cold weather hubs or did you all figure this out way before me?
That "turns to glue below 20 degrees" line is spot on, I fought the same thing on my winter beater for two seasons before a shop guy clued me in. Switched to light oil and my pawls stopped hanging up on every cold morning ride.
