I was talking to my dad about how he used to get paid for his carpentry work.

He said back in the 80s, most of his jobs were settled with a handshake and a check at the end of the week. Now, I'm sending three follow-up emails for a single invoice that's 60 days late. He told me, 'You used to know a client by their word, now you know them by their auto-pay settings.' That really stuck with me. It's not just about slow pay, it's about how the whole trust part of the deal has changed. Has anyone else had a talk that made them see billing in a totally different light?

My last client paid me with a vintage toaster and a half promise.

Honestly that vintage toaster might be the more solid part of the payment. A half promise is basically just fancy air. At least you could test the toaster or sell it to a collector. Makes you wonder what the other half of that promise was supposed to be.
