My friend told me to skip the first season of a show, which felt wrong

My buddy Mark said to just start 'The Wire' with season two because the first one was slow. I tried it for two episodes and was totally lost with all the new cops and dealers. I went back and watched from the beginning, and it made the whole story click. Has anyone else gotten bad advice about where to start a series?

Oh man, my cousin did this with Game of Thrones. Someone told her to skip the "boring politics" in season one and just watch the dragons and battles later. She was so confused about who anyone was or why they were fighting. She had to rewatch the whole first season anyway to get it. That kind of advice just sets you up to fail.

What if the boring parts are the whole point, @beth_kelly?

Sometimes skipping ahead is the only way in.

Ugh, that's so true when you're just trying to get started with something.
